Eli Sorensen spent nine years as a working piano technician, tuning and servicing instruments across Cook County, before he ever rigged one onto a truck. The job put him inside hundreds of homes right after a move — and too often he’d find a cracked soundboard, a snapped leg, or a case dragged down a staircase by a crew that had never handled a piano before.
In 2017 he started Piano Moving World to fix that. The idea was simple: hire riggers who understand the instrument, not just the box it comes in, and price every job by piano type before the truck ever loads. Eli still goes out on baby grand and concert grand jobs himself, especially the ones with a turned staircase or a tight basement stairwell involved.
Today the office runs on Renata Kovac, who builds every written quote and confirms building access before a truck is ever scheduled, and two crew chiefs: Desmond Okafor, who runs the grand and concert grand rigging jobs and trains every new hire on the boards and skids, and Marco Vitale, who runs the long-distance lanes and the event and venue work.
- 10 people total — 2 office, 2 crew chiefs, 6 full-time riggers, all employed directly, none subcontracted
- Flat rate by piano type — upright, baby grand, grand, or full concert grand — quoted before move day, not estimated after
- Every quote is written and in your hands before you sign off on a date
